Attention Candle Users!
Candles have been around since the dawn
of time, and are now more popular than ever! While candles were used
in the past as a source of light, they are now used as a source of home
decor, fragrance and just to set a pleasant relaxing mood. Many people
use candles every day as a way to pamper themselves and add a special touch
to their homes.
Candles come in all shapes, sizes and types.
From paraffin and gel to beeswax and soybeans, candles can be found in
quite an assortment of materials.
If used properly, a quality made candle
can enhance your environment and provide a source of pleasure, set a romantic
mood, light up your dinner table or even help remove offensive odors from
your home. There are, however, some very important guidelines that
need to be followed in order to safely use these products. As a consumer,
you need to educate yourself on the products you are using, and make sure
you are using them properly. We have created this site to help you
learn about candles and candle burning, and to assure you that candles
are perfectly safe when made and used right.
Bad Press
You may have seen some reports on your
local T.V. news channel, local newspaper, or even on the internet recently
making generalized claims that candles are unsafe and that you should throw
all of your candles away. Not true!
The truth is, you have not been given all
the facts. We're here to set the record straight and bring you the
whole truth so you can feel confident that continuing to use candles will
not be harmful to you or your family! Here are a few common misconceptions
about candles:
| Claim: |
"All candle wicks with a wire in the
middle contain lead" |
| Truth: |
Wrong! Lead core wicks were discontinued
and have not been manufactured in the United States for several years.
The wire cores used today are most commonly made of Zinc, and some are
Tin, both of which are safe to burn and only contain trace elements of
lead impurities. Zinc has a maximum Lead content is 0.004%.
Note: Any nonferrous
metal will have similar trace elements of Lead. |
| Claim: |
"Any candle with metal in the wick
is unsafe to burn" |
| Truth: |
Not true! Research shows that zinc
and tin wicks are safe and pass the EPA's air quality tests. A person
would have to burn over 3,000 candles with zinc wicks for four hours a
day to exceed the EPA's air quality standard for lead. |
| Claim: |
"Candles with lead wicks have recently
been found on store shelves" |
| Truth: |
Sad but true. Some imported candles
that contain lead wicks manufactured in other countries are still being
allowed into the U.S. and are being sold in our American stores.
We support a full ban on any import candle products that contain lead,
and we urge consumers to avoid any stores that carry these products.
You as a consumer can help by letting store owners know how you feel about
these low quality imports, and encourage them to carry only quality U.S.
made candle products. |
EDUCATIONAL CANDLE SAFETY
LINKS:
Important Candle Safety Guidelines:
These are some of the common
cautions you see on candle labels. Please take a moment to read them
over and realize how important it is that you follow these serious cautions
to ensure safe use of candles. Product labels are only helpful if
you read them and follow the directions!
-
Never leave a burning candle
unattended! Stay in the same room with it!
-
Never leave a candle burning
while you sleep! This is a huge cause of house fires!
-
Keep candles out of the reach
of children and pets! Many candles smell so good, and some of them
even look like a food product, so make sure kids don't mistake them!
Watch for wagging tails near a flame.
-
Trim wicks prior to each use
and keep trimmed to 1/4" to prevent smoke and soot damage to your home.
-
Keep candles away from drafts,
vents and flammable objects. This means do not use near or under
a fan or near a breezy window or vent, and do not burn candle near curtains
or anything else that could easily catch fire.
-
Extinguish a candle that smokes
and trim wick before re-lighting.
-
Extinguish and discard candle
when only ½" of wax remains in bottom of container. if flame
is allowed to burn all the way to the bottom and touch the glass it will
get too hot and could cause it to shatter!
-
Use only candle holders that
have been manufactured for use with candles and burn only on a stable heat
resistant surface.
-
Keep matches and other debris
out of the candle's melt pool.
-
Extinguish the flame if it burns
too close to the container or holder. If flame leans against the
glass it will get too hot and could cause it to shatter!
-
Do not move a glass container
while the wax is still hot and liquid.
Candles are a pleasant accessory
for your home, but they need to be taken seriously. Always use common
sense,
and remember you
are playing with fire!
