INSURANCE FOR CANDLE & SOAPMAKERS

Finding insurance for your candle business can be very difficult!
Unfortunately many insurance companies do not want to cover the
candlemaking industry as it's a higher risk for them. In fact many
candlemakers who have tried to add their business as a rider on their
homeowner's policy have ended up being dropped by their agency once they
discover they are making candles in their home... so when you shop for
insurance, keep that in mind! It can be difficult to find insurance
for body products too for the same reason... high risk.
The following companies have been found to offer commercial or business
insurance to candlemakers. Many of them may also be willing to cover
bath & body products too, but be sure to ask them and make sure! This list is provided for your use, and you
will need to contact them and verify what they offer and get the details
for yourself. |
|
These listings have been submitted by other candle & soapmakers and
collected from the message boards. Thanks to everyone who shared their
info and helped build this database! This list is not yet complete, it is
an ongoing project for me, and I will continue to add any more companies
that I find. If you know of any that I do not have listed here, please
send them in and I will add them! |

RLI offers insurance for bath & body only, no candle products. |
For those of you
who live in states where there is no listing and you are having a hard
time finding insurance, the articles below should help:
| Subject: Re:
liability insurance |
Hi,
I have found that area by area and
state by state coverage's will vary as will companies that sell policies.
I have been in the same shoes as you are now and I know how frustrating it
can be. We were dropped 2 months into our last renewal. It seems that as
we get bigger, less companies want to deal with the liability although my
premiums keep making them more and more money. I have yet to have a claim
in all my years.
Anyway, although I cannot help you
find an agent or a company, I can help you find new coverage. If you or
any other person who is finding themselves in need of coverage follow
this...you will find insurance at the end of the rainbow :o)
- 1. Find the local Yellow Pages
and look under "Insurance". I know this seems very obvious, but
trust me, sometimes it is the LAST place people seem to want to look.
- 2
. Depending on the size of your local area, this
may be one larger or not so large area, some are broken into categories,
again this will vary by area. If it is broken down, you want "Commercial
or Business" insurance. Most agencies that advertise primarily
Home & Auto insurance usually don't do commercial insurance.
- 3.
Look for Insurance Brokers. These are smaller independent agencies that
deal more with specialty policies and instead of places like State Farm,
and Prudential, they deal with a variety of carriers and can generally
handle just about anything that needs to be covered.
- 4.
Ask for the proper coverage. You need General Liability as well as
Product Liability. So many candlemakers out there only have General but
no Product, and that is not going to cover you in the case of a faulty
product claim.
- 5.
I generally suggest 1 Million in coverage. $500K is acceptable in some
areas, $1 million is not enough in others. Look at the areas that you
will be selling in.
- 6.
Finally, get as many quotes as you can. We found that policies can be
exactly the same in coverage but can cost you in some cases 100% more
than the next guy...It really pays to shop around for this one!
Good luck! If you need more
help. I will be glad to pass along any more of the information I have
gathered.
Happy Candlemaking!
